The Wild Robot (2024) was cute, but not great

I went to see The Wild Robot on Monday and I did like it. The animation style is very pretty. But it just doesn’t feel outstanding — am I too much of a critic? It’s a bit Wall E (2008), Big Hero Six (2016) and Zootropolis (2016) . It’s a saccharine, found family sort of deal with a clueless, earnest robot that tries it’s best to help a baby gosling, after the robot’s transport crashed on a remote island. It’s definitely a kids-first movie. I can recommend it tho. 7/10 above average

digital movie ticket for the wild robot. The movie poster shows the robot roz holding a baby goose in it’s hand close to it’s face against a backdrop of a forest.

If you like cute talking animals and found family I would say definitely catch it on TV. But a cinema trip just depends how cheap it is and how badly the kids want to go.

Viewed in IMAX. Monday 21st Oct 2024. Public Showing.

Minor Spoilers Discussion

It’s going to be too saccharine for some. They have a moment where the animals suspend their normal predation for ‘come together to be safe from the storm’ which was really pushing it, I felt. Despite the fact they can talk to each other, you do see the animals predating on each other. The occasional brutality — but totally goreless — juxtaposed with these cutesy talking animals actually got several laughs out of me.

“Are you here to kill us?”
